NYC Marathon Training (Week 14)

This wasn’t my best week for running in terms of how I felt physically. Although I completed all scheduled runs, I didn’t feel great for 2/3 of them. I’m starting to wonder if I’m experiencing a tiny bit of marathon training burnout, but it’s officially peak week and I’m gonna push through!

Oh and CONGRATULATIONS to everyone who conquered the Chicago Marathon yesterday!!! I was secretly tracking a bunch of you. I’m so proud (and oh so jealous) of all my friends who rocked 26.2 miles.

(I accidentally-but-on-purpose took a 15 minute break during Thursday’s 7-miler and chilled out on a swing set in Central Park.)

WEEK 14 (10/3/2016 – 10/9/2016)
Monday: rest
Tuesday: 7 mile run (1:03:57 @ 9:07 min/mi)
Wednesday: rest
Thursday: 7 mile run (1:05:43 @ 9:23 min/mi)
Friday: rest
Saturday: 18 mile run (2:53:15 @ 9:37 min/mi)
Sunday: rest
TOTAL = 32 miles

Thoughts: Tuesday’s run went great and I enjoyed all of it, but Thursday’s 7 miles were brutal. I suspect it had something to do with the three glasses of wine I drank the night before. I actually ended up stopping and taking a break at the halfway point because my body demanded it. My inner child apparently did too – I spotted a swing set and ended up swinging away for a good 15 minutes before running the remaining 3.5 miles. That was certainly a first for me…

The 18-miler wasn’t that great either, but I’m so excited and happy to report that, with the exception of stopping at street lights and refilling my water bottle twice, I didn’t stop at all to rest! It was a huge accomplishment because I felt so lousy almost immediately. I never really got into the run and battled with myself the entire time. I also wanted to see how much my achy left knee could handle before I absolutely had to stop and stretch it, and I was elated to see it survive the entire time! Oh it was achy though, but sporadically and tolerably. But now my right knee suddenly started acting up too?!? Ughhhh

I also need to figure out my fueling strategy. I’ve been doing the 1/2 of a Shot Blok approach like last time, starting at mile 6, but I’ve been feeling slightly too tired at higher mileage. I should revisit my old training recaps and figure out at what mile I used to start fueling, because it worked out so well for me during my last marathon. Starting at mile 6 might be a bit too late. Otherwise, I need to increase my calories and maybe occasionally take a full Shot Blok? Hmmm…

    I LOVE that you took a break on a swing set halfway through your run! That seriously sounds like so much fun. I can’t remember the last time I was on a swing. I’m so glad to hear your 18 miler went well! My body almost always starts to do weird things when I get towards the end of marathon training, so hopefully your right knee stuff will clear up soon without issue.

      Swinging is so liberating! Not all runs are great, and sometimes we just need to chill out mid-run, or at least I do. My right knee didn’t bother me this week, but I fell on Thursday and totally bruised/scraped it 🙁 runner’s woes…

    That swing set break sounds like it was fun…and it is still cardio right? Haha. I’ve been seeing stuff about the Chicago Marathon this year and I’d love to run it some day. It seems like the perfect fall marathon!

      Haha I guess it is still cardio indeed! Whatever works right? I’m thinking you should enter the Chicago Marathon lottery for 2017 like I will ; ) *wink wink*
